Celebrate Earth Day - Everyday!

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

ORIGINS OF EARTH DAy

Up until 1970, many Americans accepted that air pollution was a part of the smell of prosperity in the US. It perfectly normal and legal for a factory could spew black clouds of toxic smoke into the air or dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream. No want could bring them to court because there was no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act nor legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.

In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda and twenty million Americans joined the demonstration in various cities. In December 1970, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was authorized by Congress in order to tackle environmental issues.
