Where to get barePack breads and bakes for Chinese New Year 2021 - with our first ever home bakers, vegan options, and the nation's most iconic individual bakeries!
Lunar New Year in Singapore is synonymous with pineapple tarts and cookies. Unfortunately, it's also a lot of empty paper and plastic boxes that get thrown down the general rubbish chute, and never get to be reused. Not only because many are disposables that are hard to reuse, but because a lot of CNY cookies come in unaesthetic containers that frankly, we don't want to keep, especially not year on year. But luckily, this year, barePack is joining forces with bakeries to provide friendly-packed goodies to delight your family without the negative environmental impact! Here are our new and indulgence-calling bakers.
gratus: your vegan Singaporean home baker

If you took up Latin in school, you’ll know that gratus, means gratitude, and that is enough to define what motivates these home bakers to share their philosophy and baking skills every day. The vegan home baking business began just one year ago - and while the pandemic would have dishearted a few, the team wouldn't see that stop them from spreading the joy of food. In their own words, their mission is to
provide delicious and decadent pastries that happen to be vegan, not only leaving a smaller carbon footprint on the planet but also as a healthier option.
All their products are free from eggs, dairy, and any animal derivatives (such as honey).
You can pre-order from their website but hurry, CNY order close this Thursday, EOD. That's a good reason to have FOMO if we had any! Remember to put in"barePack member & container" upon checkout. Members get $1 off your CNY cookies and 50 cents off everything else.

Bakery Brera: the finest flours from Europe and Asia

Part of the bakery's secret to creating the most delish artisan pastries and breads in town lies in the quality of the ingredients used and the mastery baking techniques. From rustic sourdough, to artisanal loaves, sweet and savoury viennoiseries, or Basque burnt cheesecakes, there's something for everyone in Bakery Brera. Of course, the lunar new year season has them selling specially crafted cookies like vegan coconut, almond hazelnut, laksa (well, pineapple tarts of course!) but if you didn't make the pre-order cut-off, allow yourself to be surprised by their signatures such as the Cruffin, croissant and Kouign-amann. Hurry down to visit this quaint bakery if you haven’t – do go there early as things are selling out fast. Bakery Brera is committed in doing their part in social causes, environmental friendly and sustainability initiatives.

Orh B. Good: the nation's brownie home professionals

Orh B. Good don't make many things, in fact, they only make brownies and that's why you can be 100% sure that they make the BEST brownies, or should we say Orh-some Brownies. The B? These brownies are so decadently chocolatey that they have a nickname: Blackout brownies! But it could very well stand for blissful, best, bomb-tastic, beautiful, beastly, bodacious, brilliant... So if you're craving chocolate this Lunar New Year (and we know you are, wipe up that drool and close your mouth please), you now know where to go.

Starter Lab: the built-in bakery coffee house from Bali

If you love to watch bakers knead their magic then you must come down to Starter Lab cafe in Tiong Bahru. Come to Singapore from Bali where they supplied the island's best-known restaurants with their quality and airy bread, the term at Starter Lab does just that: experiment to bring you the best loaves. And they don't rush the process, with a minimum of 24 hours of fermenting each loaf (each bread variety is different) which gives them that characteristic lightness and rich aroma. Scones, miso baguette, and their signature sourdough such as Rosemary, Lemon and Sea Salt sourdough which they use for savoury toasts as just as delightful to enjoy on their own, fresh from their ovens. They even make it easier for our members by having barePack across all three major delivery platforms! Get yours before they take a well-earned break between the 12th and 18th of February.

Real Food & Slow Bakes: organic and vegan-friendly bakery at the heart of Singapore

Real Food & Slow bakes share space under Oasia Hotel Novena, where the bakery-cafe specialises in organic and vegan products. The founder Choi Jee Yang had a mission to inspire people around our fast-paced and inorganic city to take a step back, breathe, and taste the "slow life" that offers their organic "slow foods". Among their list of bread and pastries, their most impressive collection of buns is worth paying a visit. They use a majority of certified organic ingredients*: their Coconut buns use high protein flour, leaven, sugar*, molasses sugar*, sea salt*, soy milk*, olive oil, cell-gen water, and of course, fresh coconut. From Adzuki and Curry Buns to Coconut, Matcha Red Bean or even Chocolate Hazelnut Buns, it's hard to pick just one with such a b(o)untiful supply of fresh buns!

Haritts: donut worry

How to get non-oily delicious donuts? Lightly fry donuts in quality, clean vegetable oil
says Ben, manager and co-founder of Haritts Donuts and Coffee Singapore. The brand's famous Japanese-style donuts - a reference in Tokyo for their fluffiness and bread-like texture - were not available on our little red dot until Ben brought them to our shores. Fortunately for us, Ben spent 2 years learning the Japanese owners' philosophy before he set up his very own shop outside of Japan with them. As such, you can be sure that he will always be serving you the highest quality handmade donuts the island has to offer, made fresh every morning and out of stock way waaaaaaaay before the end of the day.

The Living Cafe: raw cakes for CNY

Who said cakes had to be cooked? Since 2011 The Living Café has offered its raw and plant-based cuisine to the nation with the simple founding vision that our bodies need high-quality foods, largely plant-based, to nourish a healthy and happy body and soul. So unlike cooked and processed foods that generally decrease ingredient digestibility, vitamin and mineral density, their no-bake cakes bring you everything good so you can indulge in their Raw Chocolate Cheesecake, Raw raspberry Brownies and Raw Lemon Pistachio Tart without guilt! You'll fall in love with these slow bakes (sometimes it takes over 20 hours to make a raw cake.. yes, you read that right) but the team says it's a deeply therapeutic experience and incredibly rewarding when they see the results. For CNY, their Orange & Almond Cake is a perfect seasonal gift infused with the healing powers of superfoods! .

Da Paolo: Italian bakery surprises

The great part about celebrating CNY in Singapore is that there is more than one option for desserts and sweet foods. Sweet foods are popular around the Lunar New Year as they are believed to bring success, attracting a sweet and abundant year to come. But who said they had to be Asian? If you want a break from the cookies, try out Da Paolo's delicious croissant-doughnut hybrid, the Crodo™! Choose between the Chocolate Hazelnut, Cinnamon Sugar or Glazed flavours... or combine them all in a box of 4! Da Paolo also serves the best scones so you want to stick to the tangerine traditions, try their Orange & Cranberry flavour.
